If you follow the Political Left, there is a decided theme of frustration that Donald Trump is getting away with murder with his attacks on the legal system.
Professor Laurence Tribe, Tristan Snell, Ben Meiselas, Harry Littman, and others all have vented at various times in the usual online locales as to why no judge has simply found Trump in contempt and stated the obvious — fines are insufficient to alter Trump’s behavior, and that he needs to be jailed to somehow to correct his behavior.
Baloney!
First, no one outside of Trump’s MAGA base is buying into his arguments. If Trump is jailed for contempt; the entirety of the Republican Party, including those opposed to what Trump has wrought within the GOP, will unify behind him.
Second, not a single New York judge has been bested by Donald Trump. He’s lost in every encounter. And not for nothing, his losses to date in New York courts have been epic — 2 defamations judgments for over $90 million, a $464 million judgment with the juice still running judgment for business fraud, and a trial date for paying off a porn-star and lying about it is going to take place, i.e. Trump and his counsel have failed to stop it.
Third, it’s not in the Democratic Party’s interest to have anything alter Trump taking the stage in Milwaukee as the GOP nominee. Jail affects people mentally, emotionally, and psychologically. Donald Trump, who has already shown signs of mental health and cognitive decline, won’t fare well there. And the Nihilists in the GOP will bend whatever rules they must to replace him if jail puts him over the edge.
On the off chance Trump shows some sort of inner strength and emerges from the jailhouse door seemingly unaffected by the experience, Joe Biden will be in trouble. Trump will ride the First Amendment train right into the White House.
Fourth, let’s not take our eyes off the prize, which is hardly a certainty; the Political Left wants Trump convicted after a fair trial. The fact that the legal system has bent over backwards for Trump simply makes it easier to mock those on the Right who have enabled him.
Convicted felon Trump is a far easier political target than jailed for exercising his First Amendment rights Trump.
