When the dust settled over the Disney-DeSantis debacle, it was clear who won. The three-rounder ended with a TKO. Unless Florida (actually Orlando ) comes up with a $1 billion bond payment, Disney and the Reedy Creek District are not moving1.
Neither DeSantis nor the Republicans admitted defeat, of course; but like punch drunk fighters — they looked around for another bout to lose.
Except in this case, it was more akin to the boxing commission disqualifying them for a prior fight.
It seems that amid Putin’s invasion and the imposition of economic sanctions an attempt was made to divest the Florida Retirement Sytem of Russian owned assets2. The failure of Governor DeSantis to act or to even consider consider a bill to that would have forced DeSantis to act cost the Retirement Fund roughly $200 million3.
There are about a million employees who get or will get pensions from the Florida Retirement Sytem and more than 500,000 homeowners in Orange County. The Florida GOP has managed to lose $200 million in 5 weeks and put a billion dollars property tax burden on homeowners in central Florida at the same time.
The Democrats need a knockout in the Sunshine State, but DeSantis and Company seemed to be vying for fixed decision4. Unless they outlaw math (and Lord knows they are trying5), the Florida GOP is working way too hard to please an ever decreasing number of Floridians — not a good move in an election year or in a 15 rounder.
