the disconnect between TV news and journalism

If you are as old as me, the days of Cronkite, Reasoner, Huntley, Brinkley, Jennings, Rather, and company come across as the romantic period of televison journalism.

Now, we have appeals to controversy and appeasement of the political Right regardless of the issue (e.g. climate change) or the historical reality (e.g. the 2020 election).

Enter Ronna McDaniel, former RNC Chair. As RNC Chair, Ronna was not simply an enabler of Trump’s Big Lie and election denialism — she was an active participant in the conspiracy. NBC, a few days ago, hired her as a contributor.

For NBC management, this was not a big problem — less so for its rank and file of employees with journalism degrees, a smattering of ethics, and/or the plain common sense to know that Ronna was going to destroy the the NBC brand.

As of today, NBC nixed its $300,000 deal with her.

While the craft of journalism and the notion of ethics have been saved momentarily, it’s worth taking a moment to consider the question “What the F@#k was NBC thinking?”
