The piss poor New York Times misses the mark on Third Party voting
The Libertarian Party has topped 1 million votes in three straight presidential elections and has, with a bit of rounding up for 20121, broken 1% of the vote three times. The odds of them doing so in 2024 is nearly a certainty.
The Green Party failed to get 500,000 votes in 2012. Despite doing well in 2016 (they received over 1% of the vote and got more than 1.4 million votes), their 2020 numbers dropped to less than 500,00 votes and only 0.26% of the vote.
Neither Robert F Kennedy, Jr. (who has endorsed Trump and sought to get his name removed from a plethora of ballots) nor Cornell West is actively campaigning.
The Green Party has been exposed as a spoiler for Trump, but a little realism here: progressives are not fooled by Jill Stein and those who are voting for her are the fringiest of eco-Leftists.
What cost Hillary Clinton in 2016 wasn’t Jill Stein voters, it was Democratic-leaning independents who couldn’t stand her. They voted Libertarian not Green. Think picky moderates not fringe environmentalists.
And what cost Trump in 2020 was Libertarian Party voters.2 If there is a real spoiler, it’s this ticket headed up by Charles Oliver.
But the New York Times sees fit to do whatever it takes to undermine the political Left. Read it for yourself.3
A little research goes a long way.
The Libertarian ticket received 0.99% of the vote
